The original audience was Jewish Christians facing persecution and tempted to abandon their faith. The author reminds them: you are not alone. A great cloud of witnesses went before you, living and dying by faith. --- ## The Definition of Faith (Verses 1-3) *"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."* ### What Faith Is **Confidence (Hypostasis):** Substance, foundation, underlying reality. Faith makes future promises present realities. **Assurance (Elegchos):** Conviction, proof. Faith provides evidence for invisible truths. ### What Faith Does *"This is what the ancients were commended for."* **Commended:** The heroes of faith received God's approval because of their faith. *"By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible."* **Creation by Word:** Faith accepts that God spoke the universe into existence. The visible came from the invisible. --- ## Faith Before the Flood (Verses 4-7) ### Abel (v. 4) *"By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did."* **Better Offering:** Abel's sacrifice was accepted because it was offered in faith. Faith, not ritual, pleases God. **Still Speaks:** Though dead, Abel's faith still teaches us. ### Enoch (v. 5-6) *"By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death."* **Walked with God:** Enoch's faith was evidenced by a life of communion with God. **Taken:** He did not die—God took him directly. Faith opens doors to extraordinary outcomes. **Without Faith, Impossible to Please God:** A core truth—faith is essential. "He rewards those who earnestly seek him." ### Noah (v. 7) *"By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family."* **Believed the Unseen:** No flood, no rain—but Noah built anyway. Faith trusts God's warning. **Holy Fear:** Reverent obedience that takes God seriously. **Condemned the World:** His obedience judged the disobedience of others. --- ## Abraham: The Father of Faith (Verses 8-19) ### Called to Go (v. 8) *"By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."* **Obeyed Without Knowing:** Faith steps out before seeing the full picture. ### Living as a Foreigner (v. 9-10) *"By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country..."* **Tent Dweller:** Abraham never owned the land—but he lived by faith, looking forward to the city God would build. ### Sarah's Faith (v. 11-12) *"By faith Abraham, even though he was past age—
