You Don't Have to Stay Distant - Daily Devotional

[HOOK] Have you ever felt like God was somewhere far off, watching from a distance while you struggled alone? Maybe life's busyness, guilt from past mistakes, or simply the weight of everyday exhaustion has made intimacy with God feel impossible. That ache for closeness—it's not a sign of spiritual failure. It's actually an invitation waiting to be accepted. [REFLECTION] Here's something beautiful about our God: He doesn't wait for us to become worthy before He welcomes us. James 4:8 isn't a command given with crossed arms—it's an invitation extended with open ones. The Creator of the universe is saying, 'Take one step toward Me, and watch how quickly I close the distance.' Think about that for a moment. God isn't hiding. He isn't playing hard to get. He's not requiring you to clean yourself up first or prove your devotion through elaborate rituals. He simply says, 'Come.' Maybe you've wandered. Maybe you've been distracted. Maybe shame has convinced you that you've disqualified yourself from His presence. But notice the verse doesn't say, 'Come near to God if you've been faithful enough.' It just says come. Your hesitation doesn't cancel His invitation. Your doubts don't close the door He's holding open. Today, right now, in whatever condition your heart is in—He's ready to meet you. One honest prayer, one moment of surrender, one whispered 'I need You'—and He draws near. [STEPS] 1. Set aside five quiet minutes today to simply sit in God's presence without an agenda—just being with Him. 2. Write down one thing that makes you feel distant from God, then physically cross it out as a symbol of releasing it to Him. 3. Throughout the day, pause three times to whisper a simple prayer: 'Lord, I'm drawing near. Meet me here.' [PRAYER] Father, thank You for never requiring perfection before offering Your presence. I've felt distant, but today I'm taking a step toward You. Meet me in my mess, my doubt, and my longing. I don't want to stay far away anymore. Draw near to me as I draw near to You. Amen. [CLOSE] What has been keeping you from drawing closer to God, and what would it look like to release that today?
