Introduction

Remember God's Teaching (Verses 1-4)

Trust with All Your Heart (Verses 5-6)
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Command 1: Trust in the LORD
With All Your Heart: Not half-hearted, not backup-plan trust, but wholehearted reliance.
In the LORD: Not in your circumstances, your abilities, or other people—in God alone.
Command 2: Lean Not on Your Own Understanding
Lean Not: Don't put your weight on your own wisdom. Your perspective is limited.
Your Own Understanding: We often think we know best. We don't.
Command 3: Submit to Him in All Your Ways
In All Your Ways: Every decision—big and small. Not just crises, but daily choices.
Submit: Acknowledge God, include Him, defer to Him.
The Promise: Straight Paths
He Will Make: God does the work. Our job is to trust and submit.
Paths Straight: Not necessarily easy paths, but right paths. Direction, not confusion.

Fear the Lord (Verses 7-8)
"Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones."
Not Wise in Your Own Eyes: Pride is the enemy of wisdom. Humility opens us to learn.
Fear the LORD: Reverent awe and respect for God—the beginning of wisdom.
Shun Evil: Not just avoid it—actively reject it.
The Benefit: Even physical health is connected to spiritual obedience.
Honor God with Your Wealth (Verses 9-10)
"Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine."
Honor with Wealth: Money reveals our heart. Generosity demonstrates trust.
Firstfruits: Not leftovers, but the first and best. Give before you spend.
The Promise: God provides abundance to generous givers. You cannot out-give God.

Accept God's Discipline (Verses 11-12)
"My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in."
Don't Despise or Resent: Our natural reaction to correction is resistance. We must choose a different response.
Discipline from Love: God's correction proves His love, not His rejection.
Like a Father: Good fathers discipline children they love. Lack of discipline is neglect.

The Value of Wisdom (Verses 13-18)
"Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold... She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed."
More Valuable Than Wealth: Wisdom provides what money cannot.
Long life, riches, honor, pleasure, peace: These are wisdom's rewards.
Tree of Life: An echo of Eden. Wisdom leads to abundant life.

"By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place..."

Life, Safety, and Rest (Verses 21-26)
"My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight... Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet."
Don't Lose Sight: Hold onto wisdom. Don't let it slip away.
Safety and Stability: Wisdom protects us from stumbling.
Peace and Rest: The wise person sleeps well—no fear, no anxiety.
The LORD Is Your Confidence: Our security is not in ourselves but in God.
Practical Wisdom for Relationships (Verses 27-35)
Do Good When You Can (v. 27): Don't withhold help when you can give it.
Don't Delay (v. 28): If you can help today, don't say "come back tomorrow."
Don't Plot Harm (v. 29): Be trustworthy to your neighbors.
Don't Accuse Without Cause (v. 30): Don't create unnecessary conflict.
Don't Envy the Violent (v. 31): Their success is temporary; their end is destruction.
